Weekly Blogging Review of Paulgarrigan.Com

I’m always looking for ways to make this blog better so I was delighted when Ben from Weekly Blogging agreed to review the website. I actually stole the idea from Mike Rose over at Thailand Blogs; he had his site reviewed a couple of months ago (read here). Anyway Ben had some nice things to say about my Paulgarrigan.com, and more importantly he provided a few good ideas about how I could improve the website. You can read his full review by clicking here. I’ve already made a few of the changes he suggested, and I’ve also broken up the links as was advised by Doug who commented a couple of days ago. In the review Ben suggested that the website looks a bit plain, and he this is probably true. I wonder what other people think about changing the theme?

Thanks again to Ben for his useful review, and I recommend Weekly Blogging as a great resource for bloggers. Maybe he will be able to review your website too.

  1. Well Paul, I personally don’t think that a website is about the look, but about the content. And what’s to read on your side, is surely very rich in content.

But hey, if you want to spice up your site, do so!

  2. Paul, I agree with Paco. Sometimes simple is best, especially if you have meaningful content. Clean designs and formatting are key to easy navigation around websites. Unfortunately I have customised Cooee to the hilt and am a slave to Blogger templates, so will probably never change the basic layout. But mine is only a humble travel blog and not worthy of too much thought 😉 Hence, a lot of pretty pictures. Personally I’ve never had any problems finding my way around Paulgarrigan.com

    1. Hi Snap, don’t put Cooee down; I think the design fits it perfectly. Mind you, I’ve zero skill when it comes to web design and that was one of the reasons I went with simple – it seemed harder to get wrong 🙂

  3. http://zenhabits.net/ for a real minimalist look – very clean and easy to read and good content. speaking of this, I subscribe to his blog with email updates. maybe I took a stupid pill today but I can find only the RSS update method on your blog. is it possible to subscribe to sections and get email updates? this is much like practice, Paul. there is no great secret to be found, you just keep at it until something finally seems to work. all the best

    1. Hi Doug, on the right hand side of the screen – underneath subscribe to feeds you should see another section that says subscribe to email. It is the third section down.

      .

  4. Paul I think your blog handles well and looks good, although a header image might spruce it up a bit if you wished to go down that road. I myself like to go for the clean white background look which you also employ and getting the font colours right is important to enhance that effect. Your fonts are perfect, very easy on the eyes.

Keep up the excellent writing, that’s the main thing.

  5. Paul I must be getting old I thought I had left a comment here. Firstly thank you for the link. I am glad you asked Ben he has some good ideas on his blogs.

Personally I think the minimalist approach is fine, a writers blog one might say, where the words are more important than gadgets. Perfect for you and the subject matter.

Love the RSS and email split-thanks for that. You have got me thinking about that now.
