2010 New Asian Writing Short Story Anthology
I admire writers who are able to create short stories; it takes a lot of skill. I do try to write in this format myself sometimes, but I find books easier to write than short stories. With a short story you need to create something with a beginning, middle, and end (unless your James Joyce) within a limited word count; when you write a book there are fewer limitations. Those writers who have mastered the short story are technically highly skilled, and this makes their work a joy to read.
The New Asian Writing Story 2010 Anthology is produced by a group based in Bangkok, but includes stories from writers around the world. One of the contributors is Thai based blogger/journalist Mihnea V. Simandan. You can find out more about this Anthology by visiting the link here. There are some free short stories available on the website or you can purchase the whole anthology.
I too admire folks who can write short stories; and authors like the one you mentioned, who tell a story in one sentence:
“Mr. Duffy lived a short distance from his body.”
— James Joyce
Hi Zentient, that is one of the best lines ever in a short story – I’m not sure if he meant to sound so Buddhist 🙂
Hi Paul,
Writing short stories is definitely an art form. One has to condense the story, and then on top of that add all the details, plots and outcomes whilst making it readable and interesting.
Short stories always tend to leave you hungry and wanting more, which of course is always a good thing from the authors point of view.
Hi Mark, I take it that you like to write short stories? I suppose the only form of writing that is more difficult would be poetry.
