There most certainly is more than one way to get over alcohol and drug addiction, though looking around you wouldn’t know it.
Any is ubiquitous, any psychiatrist/doctor I came across in my drinking and drugging years couldn1t get enough of the 12 steps.
I could..and did. AA is good for some, crap for others.
There are plenty of alternatives out there e.g. SOS, SMART Recovery, rational Recovery (ooooh), etc. etc. Just takes a bit of looking. There is also a new drug Nalmafene (released in 2012 pending license)that they say could be ..oh, blasphemy AA….the ‘magic Pill’ for alcoholism i.e. you can drink ‘normally’ on it. What do you think, Paul?

Hi Charles, social drinking doesn’t appeal to me at all; I enjoy the sober life too much. You are right about the many alternatives and it is good that we have them.
My journey has been similar. I too, spent several years going to AA meetings but I always felt that there was something “more.”
I feel that I have found that in my study of Buddhism. One of the most exciting things I have realised (so far anyway) is that there is a common “thread” of truth that is woven through everything that I have learned. Everything from what I’ve learned reading the Bible to the principles I learned in the program. I have never felt so much excitement and joy as I do RIGHT NOW….in this moment. I know with my whole being that I am on the right path and there are so many truths I have to look forward to. I am so grateful I found you on Twitter, and now your web site. It’s an exciting journey and I am looking forward to reading more of what you share. Thank you.
Thanks Susanne, it is an exciting journey; the best bit is that I’ve no idea what is going to happen next. Of course the real pleasure is in not caring so much about what happens next because this moment has my attention – I’m still working on this. One of my biggest fears about giving up the booze was that it was a step into the unknown (the whole it is better the devil you know attitude); I have grown to love the unknown and I’m learning to trust and let go. I’m delighted you found me on Twitter too; it is always nice to meet fellow seekers.
